1. Learning About the Ancient World with Voyages to Antiquity

I’ve never been a fan of big, commercial ocean liner cruises. I feel that they typically put far too much emphasis on the glitz and glamour and, in the process, miss opportunities for meaningful discovery at their many fascinating destinations. This is why the Voyages to Antiquity line of programs are among my favorite Road Scholar Adventures Afloat offerings. The Voyages to Antiquity adventures were created to offer an unparalleled destination immersion and educational experience through the Mediterranean, combining the very best in cultural travel in a peaceful, informal atmosphere.

No matter which voyage you choose, you will be guaranteed an unforgettable journey through the Mediterranean, one that opens a window into the origins and genius of western civilization. My good friend Peter Spiers, Road Scholar’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Outreach, is currently on Voyages to Antiquity: Venice, Athens and the Adriatic Coast with his wife. He emailed me from the Aegean Odyssey yesterday, glowing about the strong educational content and breathtaking ports:

“The on-board lecturers are outstanding, and the atmosphere is so stimulating and intellectual.  In the last five days I’ve seen the Acropolis, the theater at Epidaurus, the walled city of Monemvasia, Olympia, Corfu, and the stunning Kotor Bay in Montenegro. On to Dubrovnik!”

Like the rest of our Road Scholar programs, Voyages to Antiquity isn’t for everyone. You won’t find any swanky casinos or Michelin star-rated restaurants on your vessel (though the food is consistently excellent!), and the cabins are very comfortable, straightforward and come with no unnecessary trimmings. But if your focus is education, if you truly want to learn about the culture, history, and people of the destinations you’re visiting, there is no better fit than Voyages to Antiquity.

You could be exploring the architectural treasures of Istanbul, including the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. Or enjoying an Oxford professor-led excursion in Odessa highlighted by the neo-baroque Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater and the famous Potemkin Stairs. Or exploring the wonders of Pompeii, a city frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius.

One of my favorite aspects of the Voyages to Antiquity programs is that it’s one of the few cruise lines that have very low single supplements. They are rarely more than $500 and many times free! Solo travel is really becoming popular with Road Scholar participants, and Voyages to Antiquity has done an incredible job of making their journeys as affordable as possible.

My mission, after all, is to get you the best bang for your buck while helping you find the perfect educational adventure experience. For these reasons and so many more, I give Voyages to Antiquity my highest recommendation.
