1. Educational Travel for Everyone: Road Scholar’s Needs-Based Scholarship Program

At Road Scholar, we believe lifelong learning should be accessible to all older adults — no matter one’s economic status. Since our earliest days, we have offered scholarships to those participants who have the desire to learn, but not the means to take part in our enriching educational programs. Road Scholar awards hundreds of scholarships to enthusiastic lifelong learners every year. As a result of generous support from a wide network of donors, Road Scholar is proud to have awarded more than $7 million dollars in scholarships over the last 30 years to participants with a passion to learn.

In addition to offering more than 200 needs-based scholarships in 2013, Road Scholar is launching a new initiative to partner with other not-for-profit organizations to promote the benefits of lifelong learning to their adult members.

”We are thrilled to be able to offer deserving individuals the opportunity to experience our programs, and we believe that their participation has a positive impact on all attendees,” said Ann Simanis, associate vice president, Development.  “We hope that by sharing our mission and partnering with like-minded, not-for-profit organizations, we will not only recruit new scholarship recipients but spark an interest with all older adults on the benefits of lifelong learning and the role educational travel plays in healthy aging.”

    How to Apply

All applicants must be at least 50 years of age and live in the United States. Scholarship recipients are required to submit a personal statement of 150-500 words, explaining why a particular program was selected, and they must complete an evaluation form upon completion of the program.

The Road Scholar scholarship maximum is a $900 credit toward the program cost, which can be applied to an eligible Road Scholar program whose cost does not exceed $1,400. Interested applicants can apply for a full or partial scholarship; however, each will be required to pay a $100 deposit regardless of the program cost.
